Ego, Latin for “I,” in other words, self. The part that makes up your psyche, or how you see yourself. It is that sense of who you are that you carry through your life. History has long wondered if ego is an ingrained part of your DNA; something you are born with. There is a general regard today; however that your environment has a tremendous amount of influence on your self-image or self-esteem. What you think of yourself and how you relate to the world around you, have everything to do with your ego. 

Your Place in This World

The environment you lived in while you were young, dependent on others to provide for you the basics for a living was not in your control. The home you lived in, the clothes you wore and even the school and activities you were involved in were, for the most part, dictated to you. Often those circumstances provided you with a sense of who was, good or bad. You may have developed a healthy self-image that afforded you the skills and abilities to take on challenges and problem solve with little effort. Or you may have experienced adverse situations that left you with a feeling of lack and insecurities. What you carry into your life as an adult can significantly influence your life decisions. 

Carve Out Your Own Place

As you move out into the world and more of your decisions rest only on you to make, the crossroads of how you see yourself appears. Here is where you choose to allow your current self-image to continue to be shaped and molded by your past. Or, you can recognize the opportunity to become the most significant influence in your own life. Who you surround yourself with can help or hurt you in this process. Be aware of how others influence your self-esteem. What you watch and listen to has a tremendous effect on how you process information, form opinions and express emotions. As the old computer saying goes “garbage in, garbage out.” You determine what’s garbage, based on what outcome you desire. You want a healthy, positive ego; then be aware of what gives you positive mental information, thoughts, and emotions.

If you use a teapot, you know that over time, as the water heats and cools, calcium and other deposits from the water build up on the bottom of the kettle and need cleaning out periodically. The same is true of your water heater. Both city water and well water can contain suspended minerals and chemicals like calcium and magnesium. Unless you filter the water through reverse osmosis before it reaches your hot water tank, those chemicals build up inside and leave a heavy crust at the bottom. Even a small amount of sediment reduces your water heater’s effectiveness and ability to keep a stable temperature in your tank.

To ensure that your water heater gives you lovely warm temperatures for years to come, clean out the sediment at least once each year, and more often if your water has heavy hard-water sediment. 

How to drain and clean your water tank

  • Turn off the power supply. If your appliance is electric, just turn off the electricity, but if your appliance is gas, you’ll need to turn off both electricity and gas.
  • Turn off the cold water supply from before where it enters the water tank. If your inlet has a valve, turn it off there, but, in many cases, this means turning it off at the street.
  • Turn on the hot water tap in the nearest sink or tub. This gives a second access point allowing air to flow into the tank as you drain it.
  • Attach a garden hose firmly to the drain spigot and run the end into a bucket or tub if the appliance is in the basement or cellar, or outside into the garden if on the main floor. If your water heater is in the attic, you can run the hose out onto the roof to drain into the gutters provided they don’t have screens on them.
  • Remember that you may have to empty a 5-gallon bucket several times.
  • Carefully turn on the spigot and check your attachment for leaks.
  • Once all the water is drained, open and close the cold-water valve several times to force fresh water through the bottom of the tank to clean out the last of the sediment. Take care as you reopen the valve because the water will run out quickly and surprise you.
  • Finally, when the water runs clear, close the cold-water inlet and the water heater’s drain valve and remove the hose.
  • Open the cold-water valve and allow the tank to fill. Open the hot-water faucets on all sinks and tubs to remove air from the lines.
  • When the faucets stop sputtering air, close them all and restore power. NOTE: do not restore power until the tank is full. Follow your manufacturer’s instructions to light the pilot. If you’re not sure how to light it, contact your gas company for assistance.

The road to a healthy self-image is not always a forward moving journey. At times you may have to take a step or two backward to gain perspective on an area of struggle. To take even one thought and replace it with one that helps you carry forward, is a victory. Life is hard enough out there without your own brain working against you too. Shaping the voice, you hear most often, your internal voice provides the opportunity to live out a healthier mental journey. 

What You Think is What You Get

How you see yourself affects not only how you interact with the world around you, but how the world reacts to you. The things you tell yourself cause you to grab, or pass, what life has to offer. Beliefs about your abilities or your worthiness can lead you down paths that build up your self-image or have you running away. Unlike magnets that need the opposite charges to attach, an internal voice that is negative actually attracts more negative thoughts resulting in a less than favorable outlook on life. Whereas, the positive self-talk and affirmations build self-confidence that the outside world responses to often, in kind.

Gaining Some Perspective

When you catch yourself coloring your world with the darkest of colors, elevate the contents of what you are telling yourself. Often these messages are based on a negative experience or learned response. Sometimes asking yourself may not be the best way to identify these thought patterns. You may need the perspective of a trusted friend or family member. Seeking out a mental health professional can lead to helpful insights that you may not have been aware of before. Once you have identified unhealthy thought patterns, you are now able to replace those with a tone and message that can help you see life differently. 

Build a Better Habit

Putting a new tone to your inner voice will take effort and practice. You may want to write out some of those new messages to have them handy when you need to reinforce the new way of talking to yourself. You can also print out those things that keep you focused on where you desire this new perspective to take you. Steering your mental attitude when life throws you a curveball is a curial aspect of building a healthy inner voice. 

 Try this; put up an affirmation where you can see it several times during the day and encourage your inner voice along the way.

The word “sincere” comes from the Latin prefix sine meaning “without” and the cerae meaning “wax.” In ancient times, when marble had cracks or chips, nefarious craftsmen would fill the crack with wax to hide the damage, making the stonework “insincere.”

With the proliferation of marble countertops in the décor of the past several years, many homeowners do not realize that marble is prone to scratches and other damage. Since marble is rather expensive to replace, knowing how to cover or rid yourself of a minor scratch is imperative. 

Cleaning marble

First, remove all dirt and grime from the surface. Use a gentle cleaner or soapy water, or a marble-specific cleaner and a soft cloth. Do not use harsh or caustic chemicals. Even so-called natural cleaners often contain acid products such as citric juices and can etch the surface. You’ll want to use a neutral pH product.

Preparing surfaces

Don rubber gloves and safety goggles. Using very fine steel wool, gently rub the scratched area to smooth out the edges of your scratch. Be very careful not to rub too deeply. Lightly etch the area around the damage. Then, clean the area again to remove any metal filings.

Apply marble polish to a soft cloth and carefully rub it into the scratch and over all the etched surface. Buff it gently onto the surface. An electric hand buffer works well for larger sections, but be sure to use a very soft attachment on the buffer.

Review the damaged surface to determine if the sheen matches the marble around it. If not, complete the polishing and buffing two to three more times until it reaches your preferred level.

Carefully wash the area with distilled water so as not to allow hard-water deposits to mar the stone further. Pat the area dry with a cotton or microfiber towel and let it dry completely.

Deeper scratches, chips, and other surface imperfections necessitate heavy-duty grinding, honing, and polishing equipment and specialized compounds. Sometimes, specific damage needs diamond grit polishing to replenish the factory finish to your countertop. Extremely worn or damaged marble countertops require the efforts of a professional stone restorer.

Children. You love them with all your being. But the mess they can make of the house? Not so much. Keep reading for four tips on how to keep your home clean despite your children’s best efforts. You might even be able to get them to join in on the fun! 

1. Cleanup after playtime. Build the habit of cleaning up one set of toys before moving on to the next, this not only keeps the floor from becoming littered in toys but also makes cleaning up more manageable for little ones. A large mess can easily overwhelm small children and by cleaning up along the way you make the task easier for them to participate in.

2. Have an organizational system for corralling toys that works for you and more importantly your children. Make cleanup easy by storing toys in bins and baskets that toys can easily be tossed into. Cleanup is made even easier when you give everything a designated place so there isn’t a chance for toys to end up in organizational limbo. Do a walk through of the house sweep once little ones are in bed to ensure everything has been put in its place.

3. The easiest way to keep things clean is to minimize the amount of stuff you and your children own. Of course, this is harder to implement with little ones but regular clean outs of toys helps to balance the influx of toys that come during holidays and birthdays. Include kiddos in on the process to pick out their favorites and get them excited to donate toys to other children. You can put some toys in storage and swap them out regularly throughout the year to minimize the amount kept in the home and reignite your child’s interest in them as well.

4. Create regular routines around the house to instill clean up habits in your child early on. Create designated areas around the house for play time, quiet time or even homework. This helps children adjust to focus on the task at hand as well as prevent toys from ending up all over the house. By keeping a routine time of day to do a  household chore you’ll also teach little ones the importance of having work ethic around the home. You can even involve curious kiddos in the chore by buying them a child-sized broom or vacuum to “help”. 

Keeping a tidy home with little ones in the house isn’t the easiest of tasks. But by minimizing the amount of stuff you own and instilling a regular clean up habits you can keep on top of messes.
